All About Us
Who is MyVGM?
Fiercely independent and built for VGM enthusiasts, MyVGM is totally focused on making it easy for you to find the best video game music out there, be it commercially published music, MyVGM's very own catalogue of original music, or other VGM related resources available online. We will be starting with a focus on sheet music, and may expand over time into recorded music as well.
Why do we need MyVGM?
We could see there was a need to provide a commercial service that catered for VGM composes who were creating amazing, original video game inspired music but struggling to find an audience. Most publishers/distributors take a hefty percentage on every sale (sometimes 50-70%!) so MyVGM was establish to provide a better way for up-and-coming composers and arrangers to earn a good return for their efforts. Music distributed with MyVGM returns 75% to the composers/arrangers, which we feel is much fairer. And in the end, we all get to access more great music to play! Win!
Who is MyVGM distribution for?
This service is designed to promote established, aspiring and emerging composers and arrangers in the Video Game Music arena. It has been kept very accessible (free to join) to encourage people to distribute their music collectively as a way to lift everyone's profile, while providing the mechanisms to generate income for members.
Why not just publish with a big name?
You certainly can, and you are absolutely encouraged to do so if their pricing structure works for you. MyVGM though is specialised in managing Video Game Music, so the intention is that in time, this will be the go-to source that covers this style of music.
What exactly is VGM?
That is an excellent question. It is not a genre as such, but an incredible broad range of styles and genre that cover just about every type of music you can imagine. So how do we define music for this service. Well, if the music was written for a video game, that is an easy include. If the music is an arrangement of an existing game track, that is also an easy include. If the music was written in the style or in homage to a game (and is respectful of copyright/IP), or even a completely imagined game, then in most cases that too is included. It comes down to the story behind the music, and we encourage all submission to explain the story and how it links to gaming when they submit music to add to the catalogue. If it feels like it belongs in a game, then its game music. This is, of course, very subjective and you can expect some bleed around the edges into film music and even pop music, so we won't be judging too harshly, and hope you won't either.
A note from the creator of MyVGM.
Hi, I'm Scott, the creator the the MyVGM service. My goal with this service is to bring together a community of music professionals and enthusiasts who share a love of Video Game Music intersecting with a love of orchestral performances. Maybe like me you are in an ensemble that wishes to play more VGM inspired music, or you are a composer of music that would fit the VGM style and you are looking for an audience for your creations? Maybe you love arranging music or creating beautiful scores for musicians to perform, or you are a performer looking for a bespoke composition or arrangement? My hope is that MyVGM will cater for all these needs and provide a community that not only shares a joint passion for VGM but also wish to support each other to make a living from their work.
Think of MyVGM as kind of like Bandcamp but for sheet music for ensembles - the creators come first instead of the middle men. Please reach out to me if you have any questions, and a very warm welcome to all that join this endeavour.
